DESCRIPTION:Each year\, we come together to share a bit of water from our travels or our backyards\, pouring these individual waters into a common vessel to symbolize our collective community. This year’s service will begin our relationship with our new minister and will be an opportunity for us to merge not only waters\, but also hearts and minds\, as we chart our new course together. \nFor Water Communion\, bring a sample of water from your summer travels\, from your favorite meditation spot on the river\, or from your home. We’ll ‘mingle the waters’ during this special UU ritual as we come back into communion.

DESCRIPTION:Threats to journalists are growing around the globe and in the United States. While the number of journalists killed or jailed is near record highs\, they now face new threats from digital surveillance aimed at identifying and silencing their sources. At the same time\, online harassment of journalists and their families is increasing\, along with the number of credible death threats.

DESCRIPTION:This TED talk is a conversation that took place last month between 2 men\, an Israeli and a Palestinian—each of whom has suffered deep personal losses as a result of ongoing conflict between the Israeli military and violent Palestinian organizations. Yet rather than seeking violent retribution\, each feels compassion for the other and is deeply committed to a nonviolent path to peace.

DESCRIPTION:Hearthstone School has been a longtime presence in Rappahannock County\, offering an alternative educational philosophy compared to public schools. Three of the Hearthstone staff will relate the founding and history of the school\, as well as the essentials of Waldorf education. The topic should be of special interest to members of UUBRidge\, as we have had our home at Hearthstone for over 12 years.

DESCRIPTION:Random chaos touches all of us directly; some more\, some less.  This talk is about how we need to deal with it. It is here to stay. \nLee always picks topics that are either controversial or of universal interest. It is his view that all of us have experience with this topic and will bring to it a lively discussion.

DESCRIPTION:This little talk translates Plato’s cave scene into a more up to date view of the difficulties we encounter in attempting to “go beyond” or to transcend the knowledge provided more directly by the senses. By more graphically picturing the human mind’s freedom\, we may come to understand more easily why some people don’t agree with us.
